I’m sure you’ve heard of the saying, success is both the destination and journey.
I have realized that people who are focused on just the destination can get easily discouraged, especially when the goals seem to be beyond their reach.
In addition, they may adopt any means, including unethical ones, to achieve their ends.
They play to win and miss out on the values and benefits of the process that leads to the win. They may not enjoy the journey and as a result, it will affect their morale and motivation to achieve bigger wins.
Top performers are both ‘goals and process’–oriented.
They set worthwhile goals that excite and stretch them.
They are not driven by external situations or circumstances, neither are they dependent on external motivations or rewards.
They are passionate about what they are doing. They continue to learn during the process of achieving their goals – and they have lots of fun along the way.
To help them reach their final destination, they have planted inspirational lampposts along the journey.
These milestones are baby steps that are appropriate, actionable, and achievable. They help them to chart their progress and motivate them to complete the race.
Top performers solicit feedback to help them improve. They continue to increase their capacity and competence to achieve greater successes.
It is not uncommon for them to look for mentors to model themselves after.
They also seek coaching to help chart their direction and ensure they are in a better position to achieve their goals.
They celebrate every achievement, including failures.
A failure is but another milestone and it can be leveraged upon to help them increase their momentum to achieve success.
Throughout the journey, top performers enjoy themselves and make full use of their potential and life.
