Living A FUNtastic Life (Part 47)

by Patrick Liew on November 30, 2011

I am a student of leadership.

It is a study that has somehow occupied my mind throughout my life. Besides learning the theoretical perspectives of leadership, I make it a point to observe leadership in action.

Interestingly, I have found that leaders lead differently. It is not just because of the difference in objective, situation, task, or people involved.

The most effective leaders are mindful of their strengths. They leverage on their strengths to lead the people so as to accomplish the desired results.

To live a FUNtastic life, I need to realize and apply the unique strengths that our Creator has given me. Deep in my heart, I believe, all of us know what our strengths are. All we have to do is to reignite them and apply them so as to live our lives to the fullest.

This is sometimes, unfortunately, contrary to Asian upbringing.

For example, when we bring home our report card from schools, if we score an A for Mathematics, A for Science, and C for English, our parents will tell us to focus on improving the worst subject.

Somehow, we grow up focusing on our weaknesses and feeling bad about them. What we should do is to focus on our strengths and explore ways to improve and use them.

These strengths are assets that I should take pride in. I should be grateful and thankful for them. I need to celebrate when they are being put into purposeful action.

I should exercise them as often as I can and in every area of my life, where appropriate. They help me to achieve the best outcomes in life.

When I apply them in whatever task that I am involved, it will not feel like a burden. It will feel like a calling to fulfill what I was created to do with my life. That will optimize my gratification and help me find meaning and fulfillment in my life.

I hope this message will find a place in your heart.

By the way, I have also recorded other reflections.
