Learn-A-Thon 2011 is in many sense of the word an online project. It was initiated through the Internet and many of the discussions and initiatives were done on cyberspace. Participants were also enrolled through a website.
Within less than three hours after our first meeting, we set up an online registration system. By the second day, we had created an online blog and a facebook community page. The project literally took off from thereon.
The project reinforced my belief that in the new exciting world, infocommunication technology (ICT) can make or break any project or organization.
In the past, ICT has often been operated as a closed loop system, a vault that can only be accessed by high priests of technology and those ordained to leverage on it.
However, with social media, the power of information – real or perceived – can be transferred into the hands of the common person on the street. You don’t need any special education, background or experience to use it.
You can literally ‘plug and play’ on the spot.
ICT can be used to generate relevant and timely information – the currency of the new economy.
Take for example, Evelynn Tan joined us at a later stage of the project. Yet, through reading the information on our blog and FB, she could put herself on the same page within a relatively short period of time.
ICT is a great platform for collaboration, communication and co-creating solution. Many of the discussions and decisions were conducted on social media.
I have personally experienced how ICT can give us an edge in organizing a reasonably sizeable project. It has helped us to improve our productivity and achieved much better results.
Our project was run by a virtual organization and on a 24/7 basis. At 3:00am on many early mornings, there were messages flying across the Net. All in all, we were able to run our operation in a better, cheaper, and faster way.
Organisations and individuals must keep abreast of the fast-changing ICT landscape. If they are not improving their lives on the Net, they are throwing their lives out to the wind.
Master ICT before it enslaves you. You have been forewarned by a ‘dinosaur’ who saw how the ‘Ice Age’ had deleted many life forms.
Go4It!
I hope this message will find a place in your heart.
By the way, I have also recorded other reflections.
