Respecting The Elders

by Patrick Liew on June 18, 2011

There are some customs that should continue. They strengthen the fabric of society.

I had the privilege of having dinner with our ex-Minister, Mr Lim Boon Heng.

During the informal gathering, he shared with us some stories from his 31 years of serving the public.

What touched me was how he and many of our community leaders had gone out of the way to serve the residents. How they sacrificed so that we can enjoy a better quality of life.

It’s a pity that I do not hear more of such stories. What’s even more pitiful is that somehow with modernization, the Asian culture for respecting our elders has weakened.

I need to be grateful and thankful for our seniors’ contribution to our lives. I should respect them as much as I hope my children will extend their respect to me.

I hope this message will find a place in your heart.

Question: How can we show more respect to our elders?
