6. The Lee Family’s Saga

I propose that 38 Oxley Road be partially demolished.

The basement of 38 Oxley Road should be left intact because it has major historic values.

A replica of the house should be developed and be securely placed in a Founders’ Memorial Museum.

Both the basement and replica of the house should be opened to the public and viewed behind glass panels.

The images of the house can also be digitized and turned into a 3-D virtual reality with fly-through facilities.

The remaining area of 38 Oxley Road should be used for a meaningful and purposeful development.

For example, it can be developed into a beautiful garden to remember how our founding father turned Singapore into a garden city and contributed to the ongoing process of turning Singapore into a city in a garden.

The site should never be used for any residential or commercial development.

It should not be abused in any way and neither should it stand in the way of peace and progress.

The replica of the house can be used to provide a visual image of a very important part of our history and contribute to moving the country forward.

The replica will be a constant reminder of the blood, sweat, and tears that have been sacrificed to build our nation.

It can be used to motivate current and future Singaporeans to learn from the past so as to create a brighter future.

The replica will also be a tangible way of preserving and passing on Mr Lee Kuan Yew’s ideals, values, aspirations, and other lessons that can be cultivated from his life.

These lessons include love for the country and family, development and implementation of plans, commitment to lifelong learning, being discipline, thriftiness, living a healthy lifestyle, and grit and these lessons can help Singaporeans become a better people.

Before we embark on implementing any decision about the house, we should consult the Lee family to hopefully gain their support for the idea.

I hope that they will help to contribute to the narrative about Mr Lee’s house and life.

In doing so, it will inspire our people to live by Mr Lee Kuan Yew’s ideals and pass on his values and aspirations to future generations.

Besides remembering him through the replica, we can also remember him in our heart and through the wonderful legacy that he left behind, a legacy that can be seen and felt all around us.
