I was with the Prime Minister when he visited an HDB Flat in Kebun Bahru. It was a part of the completion ceremony for a major upgrading project.
The owner was recounting his days in the army, the challenges he went through, and how those challenges toughened him.
There were some comments that life in the army has improved.
I was told later, the national service men nowadays are much better treated than before. They eat better food, and sometimes even travel with airconditioned coaches.
They don’t jump down from ‘three tonners’ anymore. And the training is not as ‘siong’ (tough) as before.
Somehow, the dots cannot be completely joined in my mind.
And I don’t have all the answers to calibrate and balance the toughness level of military trainings.
All I can say is I hope we remember the adage, ‘The more we sweat during a war, the less we bleed.’
Go4It!
I hope this message will find a place in your heart.
By the way, I have also recorded other reflections.
