Rolling On Better In Life

by Patrick Liew on June 18, 2011

During My HSR Bootcamp 3, I ask the participants to draw  what I call a Wheel Of Life.

This is a wheel with eight spokes. Every spoke is to represent a key area in our life.

I believe every area of my life can affect every other area of my life.

If one area is not right, every area of my life can go wrong. On the other hand, if every area is right; like a wheel, I can roll better, faster and smoother through life.

When my life is balanced and well-managed, it will also be easier for me to be successful in my work.

Let me share with you excerpts about the eight key areas of my life.

Physical

Jim Rohn once commented, ‘Take care of your body. It’s the only place you have to live.’

That’s why, we need to heed the warning from Hermann M. Biggs, ‘The human body is the only machine for which there are no spare parts.’

During the Bootcamp, I ask what should be a rhetorical question, “How many of you have expressed your love to the major organs in your body?”

For example, when was the last time you told your heart, ‘I love you, my heart’?

Have you cherished and nourished every part of your body or have you grumbled about some of them and indirectly, placed a curse on them?

It is not rocket science to know how to be fit strong and healthy. All I need to do is to take action.

Without passion, energy and vitality, my journey to success will be an uphill climb.

Mental

When I was a teenager (two or three years ago  =) ), I was told  the G.I.G.O principle for computers also applies to my brain. If I put Garbage In, I will get Garbage Out.

That’s why, I’m very protective about what goes into my being through my senses. In fact, I apply what I call ‘force feeding’ to ensure I do not allow anything negative to affect my mind, emotion and overall psyche.

I force myself to see, hear, smell, taste and feel only what is positive.

I want to protect my mind at all costs.

Social

I am very much the result of the people I mix with. Therefore, I aim to live by the saying, ‘If I want to fly with eagles, I should not mix around with turkeys.’

Unfortunately, there are many energy vampires in our industry. They can suck my energy and leave me high and dry, powerless to soar higher in life.

Some people have told me, “I’ve not met energy vampires. Nobody has ever sucked my energy. I’ve always only sucked theirs.” 🙂

My solution to respond to them is, ‘Chow!’ (Don’t be a hero, run away!)

I have decided to choose the people I model after, work with, and keep as friends.

Spiritual

They say, “We are not just a physical being with a spirit but a spiritual being having a physical experience.”

My take of this maxim is that our Creator wants us to rise to our highest potential and serve the most worthwhile purpose in our life.

It is unfortunate but true that we devote so much of our life to pursuing, profit, power, pleasure, position and prestige. Yet, these possessions can never give us sustainable meaning and fulfillment.

In the final analysis, I believe it is the good that I do for the people around me that will give me lasting peace and happiness.

When I help others live a better life and make the world around me a better home, I can fulfill my highest destiny.

It is not an easy task and I do get distracted but that’s the purpose I want to serve in my life.

Please help me.

Family

Desmond Tutu was quoted to have said, “You don’t choose your family. They are God’s gift to you, as you are to them.”

What I need to do is to learn to be deeply grateful and appreciative of this gift.

This gift can grow if I learn to see the good in and be thankful for ever member of my family. I need to put in my belief, time, effort and lots of love to turn my house into a home, and my family into a glimpse of paradise.

Instead of hoping for a perfect family, I need to constantly improve to be a better husband and father. I have to learn to love and care for them unconditionally.

Without their support, all the struggles in my work will  become worst. With the comfort of a good family behind me, my struggles can be turned into strength, pride and joy.

I wrote this section for myself as an affirmation to work for and towards a great family life.

Finance

A wise person once said, “Money cannot guarantee happiness. However, without money, I guarantee you will be unhappy.”

Money may not be the most important thing in life. On the other hand, with money, I can do many important things in life.

Sadly, many of us were not taught in school; nor at home or in the office, how to create, manage, grow and protect wealth.

Even more tragic, many people will live till the last day of their life ignorant of this important skill. (This is one of the reasons why we organize a series of bootcamps for you).

I have literally spent my whole life trying to learn how to be knowledgeable about and competent in wealth management.

The more I learn, the more I realize how little I know about this subject, and the more I realize how vital and exciting it is to my life.

I don’t want to be poor.

I want to provide the best for my loved ones.

I want to be in a position to help the needy, the weak and the disadvantaged.

I aim to be rich and wealthy so that I can do more for this world.

Will you help me to help each one of you in this journey to create wealth?

Work

Every human is designed to work, to create value, and to be a plus factor.

It does not matter what profession, position or title you hold in My HSR Family, you are important.

You can play a part

You can make our company the best home for us to live work, learn and play in. On the other hand, you can also make our company an unpleasant place.

I have learned long ago, I’m not in My HSR by chance. It’s not an accident.

It may seem to be that way.

My job in My HSR is my calling. Our Creator has chosen to place me here so that I can serve a higher purpose.

To do so, I must love my career.

I can and must make something good out of it.

I can and must aim to be the best that I can be – not because of anybody – but for our Creator and for my sake.

I am mindful that other than sleeping, I am going to spend most of my adult life at work. Therefore, if life is short, I want to have a ‘I aim to be #1’ attitude.

Along the way, I will enjoy myself, have fun and help others do the same.

Will you join me to make a success out of our profession and career?

Lifestyle

It bodes well to remember, ‘We only have one life to live.’

‘Life is not a dress rehearsal. Like Coca Cola, this is the real thing.’

‘There is no second chance to repeat any part of my life to make it right.’

Therefore, I endeavour to give life my best shot.

I want to make full use of my time on things that matter. Every area of my life must count.

I endeavour to review every moment of my life. That’s why, during my morning Power Walk, I review what I do at every given moment of the day, from the time I wake up to the time I sleep.

At the end of my life, I do not want to regret I have not tried hard enough to live a good life.

After I have shared about the above-mentioned eight key areas of life, I ask the participants to rate themselves in each area by colouring proportionately the relevant spoke of their hand-drawn wheel.

Then, I ask them to join the coloured portion to see how their Wheel Of Life looks like. The resulting wheel is a metaphor to represent the way they will ‘roll’ through life.

Many of them will realize why they have moved through life with so much difficulties and how they can be more effective and efficient in going and growing towards success.

So, how does your Wheel Of Life looks like? What are you going to do about it?

P/S: I want to thank David Loo, one of my mentors who taught me the Balanced Life Philosophy when I was 15 years old.

Over the years I have expanded on his lesson. More importantly, I have endeavoured to live it out and share it with others.

Please pass it on – if for nothing else, so that you can motivate yourself to act on it in your life. I have done it and will continue to share about it throughout my life.
