Leaders have a tendency to over-focus on current systems without realizing that what has helped them succeed in the past may not help them succeed in the future.
In the process of working on urgent matters at hand, they may not realize that the landscape is changing.
In a disruptive future, it’s not uncommon for incumbents to hold on to status quo, especially if their current systems have won admirations, accolades, and awards.
And if their organizations have become like a big ship, it is even harder for them to make the necessary changes.
They may not be leading their organizations and people fast enough to meet demands of the future customers and economy.
Shape their people in meeting fast-changing needs of their communities and society as a whole.
In a volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous world, there is a need to continually transform current systems and at the same time, preempt and respond to disruptive forces.
To do that, leaders should be pioneers of change and catalysts for improvements.
Innovation should be at the core of the organizational culture, structure, system and operation.
Research and development should be strengthened at every level of the organizational hierarchy, right down to every team and individual.
There’s a heightened need for leaders to work closely with key leaders from not just the public but also from the people and private sectors to future-proof their organizations.
Have the grits, guts and gumption and be courageous and curious enough to establish experimental sites within the current system and without.
Pilot, prototype and pioneer radical breakthroughs for the betterment of their people.
Disrupt themselves for a brighter future and become the disruptor before they become disrupted by external forces.
