Coaching Others

by Patrick Liew on July 14, 2011

During the training for another new batch of volunteers for Junior Achievements, I offered to share a message from my heart. I saluted that fine group of people. They made a commitment to teach lifeskills to students and help groom our next generation of leaders. It was important for me to share my gratitude because I was one of the beneficiaries of such a voluntary programme. I grew up and spent a lot of my childhood roaming around Jalan Besar, one of the most notorious areas during my time. I had my fair share of fights and ‘talking about other people’s fathers and mothers’ – words that cannot be repeated in a PG-rated note. I used to tell a joke about a typical childhood friend. When the teacher asked him, “You have two apples and if your neighbour took one of them, how many apple have you got?” The answer is, “Two apples and one dead boy.” Ha! When I was 15 years old, I met David Loo, one of the many mentors in my life. He was a Malaysian studying in Singapore and he took a brotherly interest in my life. David believed in me and spent time to mentor and coach me. It became one of the many turning points in my life. I told the volunteers, “There are many ‘Patrick Liew’s out there who are waiting for us to help them. Every student we touched will make our world a better home.” In the same way, I did everything I could to build a training-centered culture in my company. I motivated and encouraged my leaders to mentor, train and coach their downlines to achieve the best results. I’m called to inspire others to greatness. And I want to inspire others to inspire even more people to greatness.
