The Land I Love

Singapore dearest,
Land untaught from struggle and toil
Nearly born still, winded away
But breathed life and today is.
Half a century you have stood,
Trodden through melees aplenty.
Applause for your fortitude!
Praise for these gifts:
Singapore, land of dreams.
To you an infant was born in poverty
Little on his back, less so in his hands.
Writhing to make ends meet,
Sungei Road—
More than the concrete beneath his feet.
Never feeling in need,
Vistas and horizons in sight,
Growth, gain, galore waited for him.
Singapore, land of equal opportunity.
Singapore, land of endless possibility.
Singapore, oasis for erudition and progress.
When body sits in actuality,
Mind sails towards infinity.
Visions of weakness fleeting,
Strength breaks through with the rising sun;
Edify me, as long as you can.
Enlighten me, as only you can.
Singapore—spirit withstanding,
Listen, see!
Miracles abound the land of the lion.
On this soil, we grew.
In this generation,
In this rubicund plot,
Scarce reserves and resources
Turned plentiful and reflowing.
Singapore, known north to south,
Respected east to west.
Others come to live, work, learn and play.
Singapore, emanate to thrive.

Once a kampung boy
With whom this land shared much.
A depth of gratitude, his guiding lights,
To ends of the world his foot has set
Yet back to the kampung spirit, his heart resides.
Singapore, you give courage and respite.
Singapore, you tilled land and man.
Singapore, you withstand.
To the fifty years lived and the next fifty to live—
Majulah Singapura!
