To Those Who Toil In Silence For Us – Thank You.

by Patrick Liew on December 26, 2013

As we celebrate the festive season, my heart goes out to the many unsung heroes who work silently for us.

They ensure that society continues to function and our economy keeps humming.

As we sleep in the comfort of our bed, they keep our country safe and secure. We can celebrate the season and continue our daily activities.

While we enjoy our life, they labour away. They support the smooth running of the things around us, many of which we take for granted.

Many of them are on standby mode in case of emergencies. They are operationally-ready to respond to a call for action.

Some are prepared to face great risk and liabilities to keep the streets safe and our country secure. The past has shown to us that they could be injured, maimed, or even lose their life.

Somewhere out there on our coastal waters, they are patrolling the area. They protect our maritime facilities and ensure the safe passage of our waterways.

As we go about our daily affairs, they make sure that various facilities and utilities are running for us. They man the shops and keep the food and beverage outlets open.

Some of them have to work round the clock for us. They work on unpopular  shifts and odd hours so that you and I can live our life.

They may be working all alone under challenging conditions. Many of them would miss their lover and family and might prefer to do the things we are doing.

In one of the homes today, a child is pining for his father to return. “A few more hours,” assured her mother, “Daddy has to work.”

These people, including foreign workers are focused on making things work. They are some of the unsung heroes that we may never know nor will we ever meet in our lifetime.

I am grateful and thankful for them.

May our Creator bless them and their family with the choicest blessings.
