Listening To Others

by Patrick Liew on June 15, 2011

If you want people to love you, you need to start with a basic skill-listening.

I had a lunch meeting with my friend and one of my mentors, David Rogers.

At one point, I asked him about a personal and sensitive area of his life. After sharing with me his unique and interesting perspective, he asked me for my comments about it.

I was not ready to give him my views. I only wanted to listen to him.

After the meeting, I asked myself, “Is it okay to just listen?”

I feel one of the best things I can do for my friends is to listen to them. I also believe – a listening ear is what many people need in life.

I have been guilty of giving advice and making judgement calls too quickly.

In particular, as a man (how many of you can tell I’m a man?), I like to ‘fix’ issues fast.

I want to develop the skill of listening. I want to lend my ears to others.

Please help me.

David, thank you for giving me a chance to learn from you again. I need more of such opportunities.

I hope this message will find a place in your heart.

Life is FUNtastic!

Question: How can we listen more effectively?
