5. Happy 53rd National Day – “Future Of Us”

As we galvanize the nation’s energy and resources to plan for our future, it bodes well to remember that the brightest future belongs to those who dare to dream great dreams.

The greatness of our dreams will determine the greatness of our achievements.

The quality of our dreams will shape the quality of our lives in the future.

Therefore, let’s be wise to create a better world that has never existed before.

Create new realities and craft our destiny.

I like to use the analogy of a computer to suggest how we can dream and develop a brighter future for our country and our people.

First, the heart-ware.

At the heart of challenging the future is a challenge at the heart level – what do we really believe in, stand for, and want for our future.

For where our heart leads to, that’s where our destination will be.

I imagine a future when Singaporeans will have a much deeper sense of rootedness and passion for our country.

Work together to develop a livable, learning-oriented, and lovable country, a home where we can create beautiful memories and find purpose, meaning, happiness and fulfillment.

Secondly, the hardware.

Hardware refers essentially to how we lead, manage and serve the country.

It includes the plan, structure, systems, processes, advantages and other resources to enhance our position, performance, partnerships, and progress.

It covers the capacity, agility, capability, creativity, tenacity and productivity of our people because these qualities will determine the the quality and standards of our results and achievements.

In a fast-changing world, we need to continue to invest in upgrading our infrastructure, competitiveness, and talent pool to support economic expansion and growth.

Thirdly, the software.

This is about developing the people in our country because the quality of our people will shape the quality of our lives and progress.

We need to develop talents at the highest and other levels of society so as to make Singapore one of the most admired and respected countries in the world.

Regardless of our creed, culture, custom, and country of origin, we need to learn how to communicate, collaborate and co-create solutions for our companies, communities, and country.

Lastly, the soul-ware or spiritual-ware.

We should challenge our people to reach what Abraham Marslow termed as the highest level of needs – the desire for self-transcendence.

In other words, they should live beyond themselves to serve a higher purpose in helping others live a better life and making our world a better home.

Continue to look out and look after the last, the least, the lonely, and the lost both in our land and overseas.

I believe that the more we reach out to bless other lives, the richer and better our lives will become.

When we serve a higher calling and a worthier cause, we will attract more talents and resources to help us build a stronger country.

Enhance our bright red dot’s potential and possibilities to help resolve global challenges and build a more stable, safe and sustainable world.

Let’s dream and transform our country and the world for the benefit of our children and our children’s children.

We can leave a positive legacy for their sake.

The limit of our dream is only defined by the limit of our passion, imagination and diligence.
