Are You Financially Intelligent?
Some time ago, I had a big dream to eradicate two of the biggest problems in the world – poverty and war.
I thought to myself, if I can resolve poverty and humans can live with abundance, there’s no need for them to go to war.
I can then resolve two problems at the same time.
Poverty can be removed because many researchers such as Buckminster Fuller have calculated that there are more than enough resources for everybody to live well.
The problem is that many people do not know how to develop, access and use these resources wisely.
Even if they are given these resources, they would put them to waste and lose them eventually.
Therefore, the key to eradicating poverty is to help ordinary persons improve their financial intelligence.
Financial intelligence included the knowledge and skills to earn, save, invest, grow, protect, and use resources, including money wisely.
So I went back to school to study about financial intelligence.
Analyze tons of primary research, academic journals, and other informational sources to deepen my insight of this vital skill in life.
I made a shocking discovery.
Many people were not taught financial knowledge and skills by their parents.
They did not learn financial literacy from their teachers.
When they went out to work, they were not able to inculcate financial intelligence through learning from their bosses and in their workplaces.
Nobody around them, including their community and religious leaders were able to help them too.
As a result, most people do not have or are severely lacking in financial intelligence.
And they remained in this sad state of affair till the end of their lives.
I’m grateful that for more than 20 years now, the company that I help founded had deliver financial education to people from all walks of life.
We have become arguably the largest financial education company in the world today.
I have also personally travelled to both developed and developing world, including some of the poorest of villages to deliver financial education as part of my social mission.
And conducted many free talks on developing financial skills literally on a week to week basis to students, the elderly, needy families, and other ordinary persons on the street.
One of the charities I help founded trained about 20,000 students in financial and entrepreneurial skills on a pro bono basis.
In addition, another charity of mine also conducts financial education for migrant workers.
They are some of the poorest people living in our midst.
In the process of training, I am thankful that I have also learned from many knowledge-hungry students.
They have a deep desire to learn and improve their financial assets and positions.
Call me an idealist if you will but I believe if I and other likeminded people teach one person at a time, one day at a time, one training programme at a time…someday we can eradicate poverty forever.
Poverty will become a relic for display in the museum.
In the near future, a little girl who grew up in a financially-literate family would ask her parents, “What is poverty?”
Pray for me as I battle this societal evil by helping others increase their financial intelligence.
Go4It!
I hope this message will find a place in your heart.
