As we watched the growing tensions between the U.S. and China, Singapore cannot just stand by and do nothing, and neither can we afford to take side in this protracted battle for ideological, economic, technological, military and cultural dominance and influence.
While we can attempt to be friendly and relevant to the two giants and hopefully, help mediate and bridge the differences, and find a middle path for them, we need to at the same time play a game of “GO” to ensure our progress and success in the fourth wave.
Case in point, we need to operationalize the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) and rope in more countries such as the U.K. to join us.
Concurrently, we should catalyze various forces to influence countries that cannot meet the requirements of the CPTPP to sign the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP).
As more countries participate in the two and other similar free trade agreements, together with these countries, we can help to foster a new world order with rules that are relevant and applicable for the new economy.
In that way, we can rebuild a global community that aspires to achieve greater good rather than having a unipolar or a bipolar world.
The rest of the world will not have to unduly take sides or compromise our interests or worst, be caught in a precarious position to consider bending or bowing to power, wealth, strength and might.
