Living A FUNtastic Life (Part 12)

by Patrick Liew on August 13, 2011

I used to joke that Singapore may become a nation of grumblers.

In Singapore, we grumble about many things in our beautiful country. When we travel overseas, we grumble about why their country is not like Singapore. J

Obviously, if people grumble because they don’t want to be complacent and they will take constructive action, it is good.

However, I have observed there are people who will grumble, grouse and gripe over just about everything. In addition, they worry constantly about them, without realizing that worrying will gradually destroy their lives.

Worrying will make them live an unhappy life.

How can I become a warrior and never a ‘worry-er?’

Redesign

I can redesign the internal and external aspects of my life. I can change my lifestyle so that I can allay, minimize, or avoid worries.

For example, I can exercise regularly. It will help me to strengthen my mental ability to cope with challenges.

Reframe

I can train and discipline my mind to adopt a positive perspective about issues in my life. I can learn to see the silver linings and not just the negatives.

For example, my ex-boss has also good sides even though he is not an easy person to work with. He is much better than many other terrible bosses.

I can at least learn to work with him or find ways to work around him to get things done.

Reinterpret

I can reinterpret the meaning and significance of the issues that may potentially bug me.

For example, when someone criticizes me, it can help me to learn from the feedback. It can also teach me what I should not do when I give feedback to others.

Criticism can also help me become a stronger and more resilient person.

Redirect

I can distract myself from being overly conscious about concerns and challenges. I can redirect my attention and absorb myself in positive activities.

For example, I can take time off during stressful period of time to go to the spa. I can pamper myself with massages and other healthy services.

I can redirect my thoughts on anything that makes me peaceful, happy, excited, intrigued, feel entertained, be proud of it, or feel fulfilled.

Refrain

I can stay away from challenges for a period of time. When I return to them, it may help me look at issues in a more positive way.

It can give me added positive emotions, motivation, energy and other resources to resolve the challenges and be happy.

Over time, I realized that I can control my worries and reduce it to a healthy proportion.  Despite challenges, I can live happily without having to worry about them.

Go4It!

I hope this message will find a place in your heart.

By the way, I have also recorded other reflections.

Question: How can we adopt better strategies to minimize and remove worries?
