As part of HSR Corporate Social Mission, we adopted about 50 elderly friends. We do whatever we can to help them live a more meaningful, exciting and fulfilling life.
I have a special love and respect for senior citizens. I was brought up largely by my grandmother.
As a grassroots leader, I am thankful for our senior citizens because they have played a part to build our beautiful country.
While befriending the elderly, I can’t help but study the features of their faces. I can almost tell those who have lived happily from those who have been plagued with worries.
How happy they have lived their lives has nothing to do with their background or socio-economic status. It has a lot to do with how they have resolved worries in their lives.
Many years ago, I decided that I will endeavor to live a worry-free life. I did it not because there is nothing for me to worry about, but because I took initiatives to resolve and remove them.
I discovered some useful skills and techniques to achieve a worry-free lifestyle.
1.      Perspective
How much worries I will have depends on how I view my life.
I see life as meaningful, exciting and fulfilling. I am constantly grateful, thankful and appreciative of the blessings in my life.
I realize that by having an optimistic mindset, I do not give any room to any forms of worries.
2.      Perception
How I perceive challenges can help me to remove worries in my life.
I aim to see challenges as opportunities rather than problems. Challenges are great learning and character development experiences.
I ask myself:
*How will our Creator see this challenge?
*How will a wise person feel about this challenge?
*How will my mentors and loved ones want me to handle this challenge?
*How will this challenge matter in 6 months time, 1 year time, 5 years time, 10 years time, and 20 years time?
*How will I see this challenge at the end of my life?
*How will this challenge matter in 200 years time?
*How will this challenge look like from the perspective of time, space and history?
*How will this challenge compare to all the challenges in the world and throughout history?
After looking at it from different perspectives, I have come to a conclusion that it is not worth my worries.
3.      Prevention
As they say, ‘Prevention is better than cure.’
I will analyze what are the potential causes for my worries. I will list them, including people, places, situations, work, and surroundings that can trigger my worries.
I will look at how to avoid or improve them so that I can prevent myself from worrying.
4.      Self – Perception
How I feel about myself can also breed worries.
If I can accept, love and appreciate myself, I can minimize worries.
As I learn to respect myself and participate in healthy activities, I can improve the perception of my self-esteem and self-worth.
I can also take initiatives to learn more things. I can improve myself and achieve a higher level of results.
For example, when I first started to learn how to play the guitar, everybody said I could not do it. I feel proud and excited that I can play the guitar now.
I can start by doing simple tasks to build up my confidence and sense of achievement.
5.      Pursuit
I can adopt a problem-solving approach to resolve and remove my worries.
I can list the causes of my worry. Then, I can explore different options to manage it.
I can start by choosing the easiest option. I can take simple and easy steps until I remove the cause of the worry.
6.      Progress
Instead of looking at worry as a roadblock, I can look at it as a spring board to progress in life. I can become a stronger and more resilient person.
I will ask myself,
*How can I learn from this challenge?
*How can it make me a stronger and more resilient person?
*How can I use it to give me a better future?
As I lessen my worries, I become a happier person.
