Creative or Base Instinct?

by Patrick Liew on December 7, 2016

When I first heard about the two questionable performances earlier on, I wrote to the organiser to register my concerns.

Although the organiser tried to explain its position and promoted values of the two performances, I was not convinced these performances were good for our society.

For example, I was told that an actress will put a finger into the vagina and then into the mouth. How will that help us?

Perhaps it’s beyond my intellect.

So, I wrote to some of the relevant authorities to look into the matter.

I’m sure there were many others who felt the same way and must have raised the issues to the same authorities.

I told the organiser that if “information about these performances reach the public, there’ll be more negative reactions because they are not likely to be in line with our culture and aspiration.

“While I appreciate art and drama and the need and importance of creativity, I’m not sure if appealing to base instincts will make us any healthier, wiser or better.

“Will being “open and liberal” invite unnecessary divisions and divisiveness, like what we have observed in recent sociopolitical events?

“Will it open floodgates to more and other kinds of questionable practices?

“Will it have undue influences on some of our impressionable youths?”

I’m sure there are many who would not agree with my views.

Now that the decision has been made by the authorities, let’s discuss and debate about the issues and learn from it. And then close ranks and move on.

Let’s agree to disagree agreeably for the sake of staying positively united as a country.
