Environmental Bottomline

by Patrick Liew on November 12, 2011

If the world is to become environmentally friendly, we may have to start from the young.

It may be wise to involve students in the planning and management of sustainable school buildings – with help from contracted vendors.

As part of the school’s curriculum or co-curricular activities, they can be taught how to conduct life cycle analysis.

They can participate in developing structure, systems and processes to improve cost savings and returns from facility management.

For example, in managing the school’s air conditioning systems, they can be involved in establishing hours of operation, prioritising the temperature settings for different areas of the school, switching the air conditioners on or off, and maintaining the equipment.

Let us not underestimate the potential of our youth in developing new initiatives and influencing the rest of us to protect planet earth.

The world has been changed by young people before and they can still do it.
