Every Vietnamese and Cambodian can choose to believe whatever they want to believe.
However, that should not distract Singapore from standing on principles even though we have no high regards for the Khmer Rouge.
The Vietnamese was NOT invited by ALL Cambodians to help them remove the then government of the day.
Together with some Cambodian opposition forces, the Vietnamese army set up a pro-Vietnam government.
Does any country have a right to intervene and interfere with another country regardless of the downsides of that country or its government?
Can Singapore as a small country stand by and not do anything about it?
If we erase our collective memory of the past, apply cosmetic on it or worst, don’t learn from it, will history repeat itself?
Moving forward, we should continue to be friendly, relevant, and proactive in building constructive bridges and bondings with all countries.
At the same time, we have to be consistent in standing by principles, and supporting a rules-based global community.
As they say, if we don’t stand for something, we’ll fall for anything.
