Giving Back To Society

by Patrick Liew on October 22, 2011

I will never forget the face of the young man holding my hands. He had tears streaming down his cheeks.

His name is Timor. He was my interpreter when I was running My HSR Leadership Bootcamp for a group of community leaders from Kazakhstan. In the same class which I conducted on a pro bono basis were leaders from India, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, and Nepal.

It was conducted as a part of my personal mission – to help leaders in emerging markets make positive impact on their countries. Through the course, we learned how to lead and create transformations in our organisations – many of which lessons I had garnered while serving in the amazing company I am currently working in.

This bootcamp, like the other bootcamps, was a moving experience. The participants had broken down in tears on more than one occasion as they went from one impactful experience to another.

All this while, the translator seemed unmoved. I thought he was just focusing on ensuring my words were correctly translated.

At the end of the class, he thanked me and told me how much the bootcamp has touched his heart and transformed his life.

Suddenly, a strange thing happened to me.

I saw a vision in my mind.

I could not shake off the strange vision. Somehow, I felt out Creator wanted me to share it with Timor.

When I did that, that’s when he broke down. There was a hidden message just for him.

Later, his leader confirmed the lesson was what he needed most at that point in his life.

To know I have been used to help another fellow human beats owning any material possession.

It’s a lasting good feeling that no money could ever buy. It inspired me to want to do more and do better for the community.

Over the years, I have done my small little part in giving back to society.

I have provided leadership and advisory services to charities, civic organizations, professional bodies, and grassroot and other non-profit organizations.

I have contributed to poor orphanages, schools, communities, and other humanitarian projects. At the same time, I have responded to relief efforts for victims of natural and other crises.

I have founded more than three charity initiatives and am still actively involved with them. I have also personally gone on overseas missions to conduct leadership and social entrepreneurship bootcamps.

I have donated thoughts, time, talent and treasure (including money) to help the weak, needy and disadvantaged live a more meaningful and fulfilling life.

I want to continue to support worthwhile causes and make it an integral part of my life. I aim to do well in my business and to do good at the same time, all the time.

They say we should never tell others about our contributions to charity. Hence, I thought for a long time whether I should write this Love Note and if it will have a negative response.

The stubborn side of me decided to go ahead because I feel it is important to share it with you as a fellow member of My HSR Family. I have no intention to do it for self-praise or vain glory.

I hope to be able to inspire you to join me to help others lead a better life and to do whatever we can to make our world a better home. There are so much needs in society and even as you are reading this Love Note, our planet is dying.

I cannot do much alone.

However, together, we can do so much more. We can inspire a new generation to put right all the wrongs in society. We can leave a better world for our children and our children’s children.

In the past, I have given myself excuses that I was too busy. I needed to focus on doing well and then, I would do my part.

I would start when I have achieved success and made enough money.

I was wrong.

I can still give back to society while practicing as a real estate agent. I can learn to become more productive and get better results so that I can do more for our world.

I believe it is a universal law promoted by every major religion that we should always give back to society. From my experience, our Creator will never shortchange anybody.

Our Creator will always give much more back to us and will bless us, our loved ones, and our business.

Obviously, we should never give and expect anything back in return.

In My HSR, we say

The best way to live our lives is to live

our lives for others. When you reach

out to bless other lives, we live the

best life.

Go4It!

I hope this message will find a place in your heart.

By the way, I have also recorded other reflections.
