The success of tackling diabetes is only as good as the commitment of the last person on the street in preventing diabetes and living a healthy lifestyle.
Tackling diabetes should therefore start from the young and continue at every stage of the formal educational process and throughout their lifelong learning journey.
Teachers should serve as models of good nutritional and physical habits.
They should train their students on how to design and implement a healthy lifestyle plan
In addition, they should discuss with students about their journal of food intakes and exercise routines and motivate them to improve their lifestyle choices.
Schools should ensure that they offer only healthy food in their premises.
If possible, they can arrange for school buses to stop a distance away so that students can get adequate daily exercise.
They should work closely with parents and healthcare professionals to conduct regular health checks to ensure that students are fit and healthy.
By taking more proactive support and interventions in what students do after school hours, they can help students make living a healthy lifestyle a vital and habitual part of their lives.
