To be fair, there was a reasonable period of public consultation.
In the process, the need to respond to fake news has been established in more than one way.
We have witnessed how fake news – left uncontrolled – can even cause deaths.
The questions that beg to be answered are:
How fast can fake news be stopped before it caused irreparable damages?
Who or what can stop fake news from going viral and thereby, becoming hard to control effectively?
The courts of law? Can they respond fast enough and effectively enough?
Appointees of the government? Will the people of Singapore trust the appointees?
Ministers with domain knowledge and the means to respond effectively and efficiently?
In the final analysis, what’s key is the people’s trust on the government.
If they don’t trust that the government will do the right thing, society will either eventually break down, or the government of the day will eventually be changed at the next general election.
