What Makes A True Entrepreneur?

by Patrick Liew on February 1, 2017

Entrepreneurship is a calling from the dark. A voice from the deep well of your spirit.

You’ve heard that an optimist would say the glass is half full. A pessimist would say it’s half empty.

An entrepreneur would rise up and ask, “How can I drink from the glass, sell the glass, or use the glass for a higher purpose?”

Therefore, entrepreneurship is not just about starting a business or owning a company.

It’s about serving a higher cause and capitalising on opportunities with the least possible resources.

It’s about developing win-win relationships, and achieving the best possible results.

True entrepreneurs make things happen and change the world around them for good.

There are four key factors that define true entrepreneurs.

These factors help them stand out from the crowd and stay ahead in their chosen fields.

1. Dream-Chasers

Everything around you starts with a dream. The world around you is created and re-created by dreamers.

The brightest future belongs to those who dare to dream great dreams and turn these dreams into a reality.

Entrepreneurs have the gumption to dream and courage to see a brighter future before the others around them.

They see the world not for what it is but for what it can become and they move ahead to redesign the world and seize their destiny.

Entrepreneurs show to the world that the limits of their dreams is only defined by the limits of their imagination, passion and diligence.

2. Value-Multipliers

The world has always been drawn to and will always be drawn to compelling and worthwhile causes.

History has proven that when there’s a life-changing cause, it’ll attract people to devote their heart, mind, and soul to fulfilling the cause.

The more electrifying the cause, the more people will rise up and fight for it.

Hence, the saying, “Give people a worthwhile cause and they will be willing to die for it.”

The mission of a true entrepreneur in the new economy cannot just be for improving profits, market shares, and growth.

They have to focus on doing well and doing good at the same time, all the time. They have to make positive impacts on the people and environment around them.

3. Pacesetters

Entrepreneurs are like a compass. They clear the path, show the way, and set the pace.

In doing so, they become a model for other entrepreneurs to pattern after them.

By showing the way, it helps others to navigate their way to success.

When faced with obstacles, entrepreneurs prove that they can stretch their minds and capacity to mitigate the challenges by acquiring new knowledge, skill set, and connections.

They aspire to become a “better me” so as to attract talents and expertise to help them achieve their dreams.

In addition, they learn to galvanize the necessary resources and resourcefulness to overcome the challenges and press on to the next level of achievement and growth.

4. Change-Makers

In the world of entrepreneurship, there are many dreamers but not many are doers.

Among the doers, there are a rare few who are achievers.

True entrepreneurs not only dream but they will also do whatever it takes to make their dreams come true.

They develop the capacity, capability, ability, agility, adaptability and tenacity to fight and fight hard to make their dreams come true.

For them, the path to success is not a short-term affair but a long and arduous path of conflicts, controversies and challenges.

The good news is that when they continue to review and improve on their chosen pathways, they’ll continue to find better pathways to run farther and faster to their desired destinations.

The qualities of being dream-chasers, value-multipliers, pacesetters, and change-makers personify the sprit of entrepreneurship.

By living out these qualities, they turn the the world around them upside down or right side up for future generations.
