I rolled down the window and asked, “What’s up?”
The elderly guy replied, “Patrick, this is John (not the real name). Don’t you remember me?”
“Oh! Hi John! How’re you?” While responding to him, I was searching my mind to find out if I know this person.
He replied, “I just came out of prison.”
Shocked with the answer, I continued, “What happened?”
“About six years ago, I saw somebody beating up an old man. I couldn’t help intruding to stop the abuse.
“In the ensuing fight, I picked up a knife and slashed the attacker. Unfortunately, it cut one of the main arteries around his neck.
“The Judge was sympathetic to my case as the murder was for protecting an old man and a case of self-defence.
“I was sent to prison and was just released from it.” He said these words in such a nonchalant way.
I was stunned for awhile. Lost for words.
Looking at him, I finally said, “So sorry to hear your story.”
We exchanged some pleasantries and before we parted ways, I took out some money from my wallet and gave it to him. “Here, please take the money to tide over the hard time.”
He was thankful for the kind gesture. We exchanged contact particulars and agreed to meet again.
As I saw the silhouette of his back disappearing into the darkness of the night, many questions crossed my mind until today.
What should I have said to him?
