Why Wrestling?

Why Wrestling?

In 2012, I agreed to help the Wrestling Federation of Singapore (WFS), an IPC-registered non-profit National Sports Association (NSA) and was duly elected to its Board.

After serving two terms of office, I was elected as the President of WFS in 2016.

It took me quite awhile to understand the values and benefits of wrestling.

Therefore, I’m not surprised that many have mistaken perceptions about wrestling, including viewing wresting purely as an entertainment or a martial art.

I believe wrestling can help participants achieve better performance and results in life, and help our country grow stronger and achieve greater successes.

Wrestling can teach you that winning is not everything, having a winning spirit is.

As long as you have a spirit to overcome challenges and to break new and better grounds, you will live a meaningful, exciting and fulfilling life.

To have a winning spirit is to have a resilient attitude, a disciplined mind, and an ever-improving behavior and lifestyle.

Without such fundamentals, you can never be a good wrestler.

It starts with the need to prepare yourself thoroughly to achieve peak performance.

There will be discouraging thoughts and challenging times, including moments when you feel like giving up,

You can get thrown to the ground but you will still have to pick yourself up to face the struggles within and the opponents without.

To be good in wrestling, you can be knocked down but you must never be knocked out in every round and in every game untill the trophy is in your hands.

Wrestling is about perfecting yourself in every area of the game.

How well you perform in every area can affect every other area in achieving success.

Wrestling teaches you how to develop your weaknesses and turn them into strengths.

And leverage on your strengths to achieve a higher level in the game of wrestling and of life.

Every point that you gained in your game can determine whether you’ll win the ultimate game of life.

Wrestling is also a game of leadership.

Whether on the mat or otherwise, you should always exercise self leadership.

Wrestling compels you to lead and help everbody play the game at a higher level.

That’s why if you cannot lead yourself to win, you cannot lead others to win too.

To improve your performance and achievements, you need to coach and mentor others, and learn how to work as a team.

In training others, you’re training yourself too.

Through teamwork, you motivate each other to achieve a more sustainable success.

Wresting is a journey and the path you take is just as important as your destination.

You need to stretch yourself to achieve worthwhile goals.

At the same time, you need to enjoy the journey and commit yourself to ongoing improvements and results.

Through the sports of wrestling, you can develop your character, self-motivation, passion, determination, discipline, grit, resilience, hard work, loyalty and teamwork.

These are key values that can contribute to sustainable success in your work and life.
