Achieving Overall Well-Being

by Patrick Liew on June 23, 2011

A Newspaper Editor asked me, “If I could have a one-to-one meeting with a financial or economic sage, who would it be? And what would you ask them?

This was my reply.

If I can wind back the clock, I would love to sit at the feet of King Solomon (1011 BC – 931BC). He was portrayed by religious texts and through archaeological findings as a man of great wisdom, wealth and power – not the most common ROI for even the most astute investors.

Economic developments and financial profits in modern times have not proven to have any correlation to any measurement of happiness, well-being and wisdom.

My question to him would be, “Your Royal Highness, how can we achieve wealth and yet be able to achieve overall well-being.”

After all, the root word of ‘wealth’ came from a combination of an archaic word, ‘weal’ which means well-being, and ‘th’ which refers to condition.

I hope this message will find a place in your heart.

By the way, I have also recorded other reflections.
