Living A FUNtastic Life (Part 15)

by Patrick Liew on August 21, 2011

“Thank you for helping us.

“I appreciate it that you took the trouble to organize all these weekly activities.”

“I enjoyed myself at the party.”

“The food was good. I had a very good time.”

These are some of the words that I heard from the elderly friends who lived around our HSR Commercial Building. As part of our Social Missions, we organize many activities for them on a regular basis.

We aim to help them physically, mentally, socially, spiritually, and vocationally. In our small little ways, we want to help them live a meaningful, exciting and fulfilling life.

Every time I mingle with them, they will shake my hands out of gratitude. They will show their appreciation for my company’s dedication and hard work to reach out to them.

Since 1972, I have been involved with this and other forms of social contributions. It has become an integral and a vital part of my life.

Actually I should say, “Thank you” to all these friends. I realized in the process of helping them, it made me a happier person.

While writing these series of Love Notes, a lesson dawned upon me.

Happiness is that simple – just be active in helping other fellow humans.

In HSR, we say, the more we reach out to bless other lives, the richer and better our lives will become.

The more acts of kindness we do, the happier we will become.

The rationale is simple.

1.       Self-Esteem

I realized when I reach out to help another fellow human, I improve my self-esteem.

Our Creator has created me with the DNA for social contributions.

Like all of you, I am designed to be loving, kind and compassionate.

By performing acts of kindness, it affirms my positive attitude, knowledge and skills. It enhances my self-worth, confidence, and sense of fulfillment.

It helps me to make my life meaningful, exciting and fulfilling.

2.       Gratefulness

As I reach out to the weak, the poor, and the disadvantaged, I’m grateful and thankful for the privilege to serve.

Our Creator has blessed me with so many things that it feels good to be able to share a part of my life with others.

3.       Competence

In the process of volunteering myself, I enhance my potential and talents. It helps me develop new knowledge, competence, and other resources.

Through involvements in different projects, I learn to become a better leader and manager.

4.       Social Skills

As I get involved with social contributions, I learn to be grateful for and appreciate people.

I realized there is only so much I can do on my own. However, with many hands, we can do wonders.

Along the way I learn to improve my interpersonal relationship skills. It puts me in a better standing to achieve my goals and dreams in life.

5.       Friendships

I have expanded my network of friends in the process of helping others. They have been very helpful to me and have contributed to my life.

I can go on sharing with you about the benefits of offering acts of kindness and being involved in social contributions.

Suffice to say, they made me feel that life is FUNtastic. It enhances my level of happiness.

Please do not do it because you feel that you are being forced to do it.

Do not also expect any rewards and returns.

When you do it out of a good heart, you will live a more meaningful, exciting, and fulfilling life.

Go4It!

I hope this message will find a place in your heart.

By the way, I have also recorded other reflections.
