Increasing The Four Bottomlines

by Patrick Liew on August 25, 2011

I attended a seminar organized by the Singapore Institute of Directors (SID). It is one of the pre-requisites to be a CEO and director of a public-listed company.

In the process of a discussion, Mr. John Lim, Chairman of SID reminded everybody about the triple bottom lines of an enterprise. This concept was apparently developed by Shell and British Petroleum.

My company endeavors to enhance these bottomlines. I have also encouraged entrepreneurs , including agents, to support it.

In my humble opinion, to increase the Three Bottomlines, we need to ask ourselves the following questions:

1. Financial Bottomline

How can I maximize my value-additions to achieve win-win results?

2. Social Bottomline

How can I maximize my contributions to my family, friends, customers, colleagues, and communities?

3. Environmental Bottomline

How can I best protect, sustain, and enhance environmental resources?

I have added another bottomline. For lack of a better word, I call it the Spiritual Bottomline.

The question I need to ask myself is,

How can I help myself, my company, and my loved ones to serve a higher purpose in life?

Go4It!

I hope this message will find a place in your heart.

By the way, I have also recorded other reflections.
